PH.D STUDENTS
Ph.D students admitted to the department receive, as a general rule, five years and two summers of full support, which includes any outside support (i.e. Mellon, NSF). A fellowship in combination with five quarters of teaching assistantship (during the second, third and fifth years) pay for tuition and provide a living stipend.
Stanford is on the quarter system. The normal combination of fellowship and teaching assistantship is as follows.
First year
You will be on a fellowship for three quarters. There is no teaching requirement so you can devote all your time to your class work.
Second year and Third Year
You will have two quarters of fellowship, and four quarters of teaching assistantship. A Teaching Assistant normally leads two discussion sections of one course a quarter. Exactly which quarters you will end up teaching depends on a variety of considerations.
Fourth year and Fifth Year
You will receive five quarters of full support and will need to teach for only quarter during those two years. This frees up lots of time during your fouth and fifth year for working on your dissertation.
Sixth Year
We do have some funding for the sixth year but cannot guarantee funding at this point.
Summers
There are normally four summers of fellowship support.
In addition, you will receive the full cost of individual health insurance during your funded quarters. We also have additional funds for each student for books, computer equipment, conference travel expenses or other incidental expenses. It is currently a $1,000 per student each year.
Our graduates also successfully apply to outside fellowships such as the Newcome Doctoral Dissertaton Fellowship or dissertation fellowships through the Stanford Humanities Center.
M.A. STUDENTS
There is no funding available for M.A. students.
