An important dimension of the current political tumult in the United States is conflict over lessons taught in K12 public schools. There are heated arguments underway about such topics as how to narrate the place of slavery and racial hierarchies in American history; about whether and how to include references to sexuality, gender and transgender identities in health and civics classes; and the proper topics and sequences of reading and mathematics instruction.

Universities play a special role in these conflicts because their faculties often author curricular materials, advise education officials, and train the next generations of classroom teachers and leaders.

This will be an open public forum featuring Stanford faculty offering historical and social-scientific context for struggles over curriculum. The forum will feature brief remarks by several GSE faculty and include a town-hall style discussion. Contributors include: Alfredo Artiles, Patricia Bromley and Michael Hines.
