First Annual Interdisciplinary Humanities Symposium

"Reading and Interpretation: Between Understanding and Experience"
 
The First Annual Interdisciplinary Humanities Symposium inaugurates a new tradition at Stanford.  The conference will highlight interdisciplinary work in the Humanities being done in Stanford’s graduate programs, and will also feature some of the most exciting work being done around the country, including keynote lectures by Niklaus Largier (UC, Berkeley) and Robert Pippin (U. of Chicago).  Planned each year by students in Stanford’s interdisciplinary humanities Ph.D. Minor, the Symposium addresses both substantive questions that cross boundaries between humanistic disciplines, as well as methodological questions, and the specific challenges and opportunities presented by interdisciplinary work in the Humanities within a rapidly changing university landscape.  This year’s meeting will present panel discussions among Stanford and external faculty, as well as featured presentations of the newest ongoing interdisciplinary work by Stanford graduate students in the Humanities.

9:30-11:00 am | Keynote Lecture
Niklaus Largier (UC, Berkeley) speaks on "Figures of Possibility: Between Hermeneutics and Experience".
 
11:00 am - 12:00 pm | Faculty Panel
A panel discussion on the topics of interpretation and hermeneutics featuring Niklaus Largier (UC, Berkeley), Robert Pippin (U. of Chicago), Rachael Briggs (Stanford) and Joshua Landy (Stanford).
 
12:00-1:00 pm | Lunch
 
1:00-2:30 pm | Graduate Student Panel Presentations
Graduate students from the Division of Literatures, Cultures, and Languages, the Philosophy Department, and the Theater & Performance Studies Department present original research.
 
2:30-3:00 pm | Coffee Break
 
3:00-4:00 pm | Reading Group
Symposium presenters and attendees engage in a seminar-style reading session on Susan Sontag's "Against Interpretation" and Marianne Moore's "Poetry". Texts will be provided; no need to read in advance.
 
4:00-5:30 pm | Keynote Lecture
Robert Pippin (U. of Chicago) speaks on "Hitchcock's Vertigo: On the Anxieties of Unknowingness".
